How do I make my home feel calm and organised when I’m really busy?

The secret to homes that always feel calm.

A calm and organised breakfast set up with a jar of oats, a ramekin of blueberries and milk in a jug. There is a linen napkin and a teaspoon.
A vase of white tulips sets off the scene.

It’s a question we hear in lots of different forms.

How do some people keep their homes so organised?

How do I stay on top of the house when both of us work?

Why does my home always feel messy even though we have a cleaner?

How can I make running our home feel less overwhelming?

And perhaps the most important question of all:

Why does it feel as though I am constantly doing things at home, but never quite getting on top of it?

The answer might be simpler than you think.

The homes that feel calm aren’t necessarily the ones where someone spends hours cleaning every day.

They are usually the homes where fewer things are being left to chance.

Calm homes have systems

Think about a hotel room for a moment.

Part of the reason it feels so peaceful when you first walk in is that everything has a place and there is very little asking for your attention.

At home, the opposite can easily happen:

The post is on the kitchen island waiting to be dealt with.

The children's shoes are by the door.

There is a pile of clean washing waiting to be put away.

You've run out of dishwasher tablets.

Someone needs a clean sports kit tomorrow.

There's food in the fridge, but no obvious dinner.

And there's something on the stairs that has been there for three days because nobody quite knows where it belongs.

None of these things is a disaster.

But together, they create noise.

A calm home reduces the number of things asking you to think about them.

That is where good home management comes in.

The secret isn't doing more

For busy families, the answer is rarely to try harder.

You probably don't need another list telling you to clean your fridge on a Tuesday or fold your towels a particular way.

You need the home itself to work better.

That might mean having a proper place for school bags so nobody has to search for them in the morning.

It could mean checking the family calendar at the beginning of the week and making sure everything needed for the days ahead is ready.

It could be having a laundry routine so PE kit isn't discovered at 9pm the night before it is needed.

Or keeping the things you use regularly stocked so you aren't constantly adding another emergency purchase to your day.

Individually, these are tiny things.

Collectively, they change how a home feels.

Cleaning and home management aren't quite the same thing

A good cleaner can make an enormous difference to a home.

But if you're finding that the house can be beautifully clean and still feel overwhelming, you may need something different.

Home management looks at how the whole home is running.

A Home Manager can take care of housekeeping and cleaning, but they can also organise cupboards, manage laundry, change beds, prepare meals, keep household essentials stocked, prepare children's kit, help manage the household calendar and notice the little jobs that need attention.

Most importantly, they begin to understand the rhythm of your particular home.

Instead of waiting to be given a list, they can start to see what needs doing.

That distinction matters.

Because the real luxury isn't having someone to complete a list of jobs.

It's not having to write the list in the first place.

How to make my home calm and organised: What would it look like?

It doesn't have to be immaculate.

There can still be children's drawings on the fridge, muddy boots by the back door and a dog asleep somewhere inconvenient.

Calm isn't perfection.

It is knowing that the important things are taken care of.

There is food in the fridge.

The washing isn't becoming a mountain.

The beds are fresh.

Things generally have somewhere to live.

The house is clean.

Tomorrow's kit is ready.

Someone has noticed that you're running low on washing powder.

And when you walk through the door at the end of the day, your home isn't presenting you with another shift.

It is looking after you.

How can a busy family create a calmer home?

To make your home calm and organised, start by noticing the things you repeatedly have to think about.

For one week, pay attention every time you find yourself thinking:

I must remember to…

Those moments are incredibly useful.

If you're repeatedly remembering the same thing, there's probably an opportunity to create a system around it.

Perhaps it's checking school bags every evening.

Perhaps it's meal planning once a week.

Perhaps it's keeping spares of the household products you never want to run out of.

Perhaps it's giving the things that regularly cause clutter a permanent home.

Or perhaps you've reached the point where what you really need isn't another system to manage yourself.

You need someone else to take responsibility for some of it.

Maybe calm isn't about having less to do

Maybe it's about having less to think about.

Because when someone else notices that the fridge needs restocking, the school trousers need washing, the spare room needs preparing and the dog food is running low, those things no longer have to live in your head.

And that's the secret behind many homes that seem to effortlessly feel calm.

They aren't effortless at all.

Someone is taking care of them.

And we believe your home should take care of you, too.
